Dig Deeper... Fania Records When a record label can capture a musical movement, it achieves legendary status. When a record label can capture an entire historical moment -- a moment of massive change and progress -- it becomes something much more.
Fania Records is equivalent to the 1960s and 70s Nuyorican cultural movement. Encapsulating the rhythmic and stylistic advances in barrio music that would come to be known as "salsa," as well as the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of Boricua youth in New York City. Serving as the unofficial soundtrack to the struggle for human rights, Puerto Rican independence, and the Young Lords party and other NYC youth organizations, Fania had the rare combination of big record sales and serious street credibility.
Fania Records assembled the greatest roster of instrumental virtuosos since Blue Note. Under the leadership of Jerry Masucci and Johnny Pacheco, Fania ascended to the throne of Latin music for nearly 30 years, helping to cement names like Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Ray Barretto, and Willie Colon forever in the minds of music afficionados. As the style grew and evolved, Fania refused to stand still, continuing to respond to the new styles of the streets while releasing "Latin music" that at times sounded like funk, or rock, or jazz, or something entirely experimental. And the lyrics -- whether something direct like "Mi Gente" or something more subtle, such as "Pedro Navaja" -- celebrated Latino pride, ethnic identity, and socio-political struggle. Its only right that we pay homage to Fania -- and indeed, to that era of struggle. Cuz the struggle continues....

Chuchito Valdés (www. myspace. com/chuchitovaldes) A descendant from a distinguished musical family, Chuchito Valdés experienced great innovation in Cuban music, at the age of sixteen, which notably lead him to becoming a renowned African-Cuban jazz pianist and collaborator with Cuban band, Irakere,
Bobbito(www. myspace. com/bobbitogarcia) Bounce magazine's co-founder and Editor at Large DJ Bobbito Garcia, a.k.a. Kool Bob Love, has spent the last 18 years relentlessly pursuing his passions in music and basketball. A bonafide Hip Hop legend, Bobbito's musical passion goes beyond just Rap. Having opened up for Latin music legend Eddie Palmieri and Afro-Funk progenitor Tony Allen, crowds worldwide have celebrated his unique blend of Rare Funk, Latin, Afro-Beat, Soul, Classic Rock, House and Ballads.
Sake1(www. myspace. com/djsake1) A child of Elegua and proud ancestor in training, DJ Sake1 reps San Francisco, CA and attempts to use the universal language of music to create positive social change. Founding member of the (((Local 1200))) DJ crew, student of the late great DJ Dusk (Ibaye), younger brother of the legendary DJ Adam Goldstone (Ibaye), and child of the Struggle -- DJ Sake One was inspired by the Fania movement and began digging and studying Fania releases in the mid-90s.
It is both and honor and a great responsibility to pay tribute to the Fania sound, and the social movement it came out of, for DJ Sake One.

This event is a particularly special one for all of us @ ArtDontSleep We have worked on making this event happen for close to a year now. Sake 1 of PST and ArtDontSleep have worked very hard to create a bridge between LA and The Bay. There is still a whole lot of work to do, but we are getting much closer. This event is proof!
